I’m reducing my makeup bag down to the essentials one product at a time. See my full Makeup Bag Minimalism series here.

Following primer, concealer is next essential product in my makeup arsenal. I’ve always used concealer to cover up blemishes, but I never really got along with the under-eye variety before. I’ve recently discovered (read: given into the hype about) Nars Creamy Concealer. And I’m not disappointed at all – the formulation works really well for me and I now appreciate how much of a difference it makes in the under-eye area and with discolouration too, particularly as I don’t normally wear a very heavy base. When I want to forgo foundation altogether, I’ll still apply concealer under my eyes to brighten the area.

Nars Creamy Concealer is an excellent catch-all product – it works on both blemishes and the under-eye area. However, before I found this, the blemish concealer I always used was Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage. It’s a little bit of a faff – it comes in a palette and it’s fairly solid, so you really have to warm it up with a brush/your finger to get it going. The palette also comes with two shades, which you can mix together to get your perfect shade (this is good if your colour changes a lot through the year), but like I said, faff. Anyway, once you have your perfect shade/consistency mixed, you can use a super tiny Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage brush to pinpoint each blemish. The ladies on the counter have worked WONDERS on my face with this method – I’m good, but I mean I’ve witnessed miracles. Also it really stays put once it’s on there. So I would definitely recommend if blemishes are your main issue. This product is far too heavy for the under eye area though, so you would need something else (like Nars).

OR… if you’re after a particularly brightening effect under the eye, the famed YSL Touche Éclat is very good. Not that I’m telling you anything you didn’t know – it’s probably one of the most hyped product out there. It’s very much an under-eye brightener though – you don’t want to be highlighting those blemishes! But it works well in conjunction with the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage.

Have you tried any of these products? What do you think?
