Makeup Bag Minimalism | #7 Brows

February 20, 2015

Even when I’m not wearing a full face of makeup I often still “put my brows on”. I’m quite lucky – my brows don’t need too much help. I have them threaded once every couple of weeks to keep them neat, and my brow kit consists of a pencil for filling in sparse areas, a spooly and a brow gel to keep them in place.

My daily brow routine looks something like this:

1. My brows can get a little unruly, so if I’m overdue a trip to the beautician, I use my spooly to brush my brows upwards and then use tiny nail scissors to carefully trim any that are out of place. I almost never pluck my brows – I prefer to just wait and have them threaded when needed.

2. Next, I fill in the gaps. Using a pencil with a very sharp nib, I draw feathered lines along the outline of the brow, top and bottom, stopping at the arch. I brush out my brows with a spooly again to keep the line natural. Then I go in and fill in any gaps. I like to keep it quite sparse at the very front, and I go quite lightly filling in the tail part, just lots of soft feathery strokes. I personally like to keep my brows neat but natural. I prefer to use a pencil for my brows because I feel like I can get a sharper line and that I have more control over where I apply more product. I used to use a powder, but I find that the line can get a bit blurry.

I used the Laura Mercier Brow Pencil in Warm Brunette until it was a stub, but I recently decided to follow the masses and try out Anastasia Brow Wiz, in Warm Brown. It’s great because it has a super tiny, no-sharpen nib. In the name of minimalism, I only use one pencil, although I’ve seen some YouTube gurus using multiple shades on their brows for more dimension (I have neither the time nor skill for this!).

3. The last step for my brows is a bit of gel, just to keep them in place all day, and to add a little dimension. You can choose clear or coloured gel. I like coloured – I use the Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel in Espresso, and my brows don’t budge all day.

And there you have it. I’m sure lots of people get away with just one (or even fewer!) brow products, and some might have a couple more, but for me, these two are definitely makeup bag essentials.

What’s your brow routine?
